Archana Sharma was born on June 16, 1932, in Pune. She grew up in an academic family – her father and grandfather were professors. Dr. Archana completed her initial education in Rajasthan and a bachelor’s degree in Bikaner, but her education did not stop there. She also obtained a master’s degree (1951) and a doctorate (1955) from the Department of Botany, University of Calcutta. The university is the second oldest in the country. In 1960, Sharma was only the second woman to receive a doctorate. She specializes in cytogenetics, human genetics, and environmental mutagenesis.

Shortly after that, in 1967, Sharma began her professional career at the University of Calcutta. In 1972 she became a professor of genetics at the Center for Advanced Studies in Cell and Chromosomal Research. She followed Prof. A.K. Sharma, Head of the Department of Botany, for two years in 1981.
Archana Sharma was a pioneer in the study of chromosome structure, where she developed new staining and pretreatment techniques. Their contribution should not be underestimated as this technique is widespread and used by scientists worldwide. With her husband, A.K. Sharma, she published a book entitled Chromosome Techniques: Theory and Practice based on her dedicated research and studies. The book is standard work in the field, and its name is synonymous with research on plant chromosomes.
