Archana Sharma was born on June 16, 1932, in Pune. She grew up in an academic family – her father and grandfather were professors. Dr. Archana completed her initial education in Rajasthan and a bachelor’s degree in Bikaner, but her education did not stop there. She also obtained a master’s degree (1951) and a doctorate (1955) from the Department of Botany, University of Calcutta. The university is the second oldest in the country. In 1960, Sharma was only the second woman to receive a doctorate. She specializes in cytogenetics, human genetics, and environmental mutagenesis.

Shortly after that, in 1967, Sharma began her professional career at the University of Calcutta. In 1972 she became a professor of genetics at the Center for Advanced Studies in Cell and Chromosomal Research. She followed Prof. A.K. Sharma, Head of the Department of Botany, for two years in 1981.

Archana Sharma was a pioneer in the study of chromosome structure, where she developed new staining and pretreatment techniques. Their contribution should not be underestimated as this technique is widespread and used by scientists worldwide. With her husband, A.K. Sharma, she published a book entitled Chromosome Techniques: Theory and Practice based on her dedicated research and studies. The book is standard work in the field, and its name is synonymous with research on plant chromosomes.

Another vital contribution of Sharma’s laboratory is the new concept of vegetative-reproductive plant species, published in Nature, one of the world’s most cited and respected academic journals. Sharma made a name for herself in no time and earned an excellent reputation in the industry.

As her career progressed, Dr. Archana Sharma’s curiosity and willingness to learn prompted her to develop a broader range of research interests. She has done extensive work in the field of human genetics. Together with her group, he has significantly contributed to the effect of arsenic on water. It also examines the effects of plant products on altering the cytotoxicity of known contaminants. Her various interests have driven Sharma to seek and find innovation throughout her career.

Sharma has published between 300 and 400 scientific articles and about 10 books during her long and commendable career. She is the founder of Nucleus, a journal of cytology and related subjects, and remained its editor until 2007. Her name is associated with publishers such as CRC Press and Oxford, where she edited many works.

Archana Sharma’s dedication to her work is undeniable. Her passion for her work is reflected in her efforts to lead her work outside the lab. She participates in and contributes to various professional societies and high-level government agencies. Archana is a Fellow of the Indian National Academy of Sciences, Indian Academy of Sciences, and National Academy of Sciences, India. She served as President of the Indian Botanical Society and later the National Academy of Sciences Biology Section. Sharma also served as President of the Association of Indian Scientific Congresses from 1986 to 1987, among other national and international positions.

Her contribution did not go unnoticed – Sharma received the 1984 Padma Bhushan, the state’s third-highest award. In addition, she also has the Shanti Swarup Bhatnagar Award and J.C. Award.
